This week 3D Gunstar Heroes hits the 3DS eShop in Japan, and it's bringing with it a host of new features.
In addition to being in stereoscopic 3D and offering the usual range of screen filters, the game will also include a brand-new "All Spec" mode which grants immediate access to all 14 weapons available in the game. Mega Life mode doubles the number of lives you have in stock, making it easier to face the game's incredible boss battles.
Local co-op play is also supported, but both players will need a copy of the game on their 3DS console. You'll also be able to toggle between the Japanese and "overseas" versions of the game.
Are you excited about playing this Treasure classic on your handheld? Let us know by posting a comment.

Will it come to Australia though? Sega forgot about us the last round of 3d classics.
Day one for me. I miss Treasure games. Heard people from this studio worked on Kid Icarus Uprising. Wouldn't surprise me considering the very fast paced gameplay of the game
My favorite game. Oh, just how amazing it would be if Sega was preparing an expanded 3DS collection of this and all of their other 3D Mega Drive/arcade remakes for the overseas markets!
YAAAAY downloading it now!
YASSSSSSSSSSSSSS! I want this on my 3DS now. Also patiently waiting for Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2!
@bitleman
They are also behind the Gaist Crusher games on 3DS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AOEkkl97_g
Sadly they are Japan only.
Brilliant! These new modes, like what they did to Streets of Rage 3D with the "1 hit kill" option, allow me to play these classics with my 4 year old, and we have a BLAST playing co-op! I'm definitely picking up a copy for him and one for myself the day it comes out.
Oh my, for a second there, I thought we were able to play as Green on this one!
Wii u sega!! Wii u!!!
200% Ready. I for one hope the SEGA 3D Classics never end. Ristar, Vectorman, Comix Zone, Golden Axe, Alien Soldier, Dynamite Heady, Light Crusader, Alien Storm, Kid Chameleon, Shadow Dancer, The Super Shinobi, Eternal Champions...
Maybe not Eternal Champions.
Cant wait for a uk release
@EllenJMiller I'd love them to continue but I'd like to see them expand beyond 2d titles. I'd like 3d Classic Daytona, Sega Rally, Virtua Fighter etc.
Oh, hail yes. Gimme.
This game will be mine.
The more 3D Classics the better. It's a shame there's no Download Play as I doubt I'll be able to find anyone with a copy. Sucks buying it twice just to play 2player... But better than nothing.
Yes, one of my all time favorite genesis games
@bitleman Really? So they work for Nintendo now?
@bitleman
I had no idea that was the case, but it makes perfect sense.
I had hoped that if the upcoming Star Fox wasn't being developed by EAD, then Nintendo would hand it to Treasure to take care of (although I don't mind it being in Platinum's capable hands at all). Treasure would have done it justice.
But on the subject of Gunstar Heroes, I'm buying the crap out of this. The original is my favorite game from that era.
I haven't tried any of the other 3D classics, but I'll probably get this one.
Another treasure by Treasure??! Sign me up!!
I'm more looking forward to treasure releasing 3D radiant silvergun and 3D ikaruga
Oh my god it happened!!!
Hope it comes to U.S. Soon enough!
What is funny is Sega seems to understand better what to do with their old properties on the 3DS than Nintendo does. I will totally buy a 3D version of Gunstar Heroes.
more exited for the fact that this opens possibility for a 3D dynamite headdy. my game all time.
Gunstar Heroes is ridiculously fun, and I know a good number of friends who liked it, too. Hopefully, I can convince them to get it so we can play it co-op!
I want this so bad!
Such a classic and Sega's [re]doing these kinds of classics more justice than basically anyone in the industry with the 3D Classic range. It's literally laughing in the face of Nintendo's own pathetic VC efforts.
Im so f***ing excited about this game!
Honestly, its like one of my favorite games all time!
To be able to have it on the 3DS is a dream come true, Ive waited for so long.
The thing that sucks though is that you need two copies for Co-op...
It feels like so many games on the 3DS does that for the wrong reasons (I think).
Because it feels like they want you to buy two copies obviously, but many times, it feels like if you're actually able to play the game with someone who doesn't have a copy, that leads to the extra copy, and many times a new fan of the franchise in question, which of course in turn, generates more copies.
Some of the first party titles do a good job of this actually, like MK7 and Mario Party, where they let you do Download Play.
That has led some of the people I've showed games to, to become fans of them, buying more games.
And when you look at home consoles, all you need there is an extra controller.
So yeah, it is truly a huge negative on many 3DS games...
But hey, still happy the game is coming!
This is how you treat quality Retro titles form your back catalogue and price them correctly NOT the LAZY arse way Nintendo does things it simply shines a Bright light on Nintendo's attitude nowadays.
@XyVoX Do keep in mind that it's a lot simpler to just emulate an old game to rerelease it on the Virtual Console (particularily when dealing with 3rd parties), which has allowed Nintendo to rerelease a huge portion of its and other companies' back catalogues through either the Wii, Wii U, or 3DS shops compared to the dozen or so titles Sega has remastered.
However, if you're just comparing the two companies' lines of 3D classics, then yes Sega has been vastly superior in how they handle remastering their old titles.
Gunstar heroes what a game
I'd just like to have Outrun now. Is that too much to ask?
It's not? Ok, I'd like Quackshot, Thunderforce IV, Enduro Racer, Sonic 2 and Kid Chameleon also plz.
@BulbasaurusRex @XyVoX Funny thing is M2 the team responsible for the sega 3d classics are also responsible for the gba and I believe snes vc, maybe all the wii u vc emulator infrastructures. Nintendo should just commission them to do some 3d remasters of whatever games that fit that criteria. Mind you if you look at M2's blog and see their process, it is very technically challenging procedure with a lot of blood and sweat. So it would be suited to only certain style of games. But could be awesome.
