Fire Emblem Engage is set to bring a number of characters from the series' past back into the swing of battle, and one such returning hero is Celica.
Running up to the the game's release on January 20th, 2023, Nintendo has been revealing more information about each of the returning characters, with Celica taking the limelight today.
In a series of tweets from the game's official account, we have been provided with a brief overview of Celica's character (thanks to @SerenesForest for the translation):
The Emblem Celica (VA: Nao Tōyama), also known as the "Emblem of Echoes", is a princess and warrior priestess from a bountiful nation. A survivor of the Zofian royal family from the Outrealm continent of Valentia.
We also got a look at two different videos featuring the returning hero. The first shows her magic abilities in battle, while the second is a cutscene with the game's protagonist, Alear (for which you can find an English-subbed version from princereyson below).
Fire Emblem Engage will mark Celica's return to the franchise after previously appearing in Fire Emblem Gaiden and its 3DS remake Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. She will be joining the likes of Marth, at whom we got a closer look at earlier this month.

I am so incredibly hyped it's unbearable. I just managed to pre-order the Divine Edition as well.
Alm couldn't make it, he's stuck in Nuibaba's castle.
One of my FE favourites by now. Great to have her in the apparent main campaign here - Warriors seemingly has her locked behind the history mode (not that I don't value her and Lyn being there at all).
Have they mentioned yet what gimmicks these past FE characters add to the game? From the videos shown so far it looks like only visuals alone
This might end up being one of my first fe games, I’m really liking it!
I just hope they don't ride the nostalgia for the old MC's and devote some time to actually fleshing out the new characters and stories. Nothing they've shown so far has really gripped me. I guess I'm just worried because they made Marth take up half the game's boxart.
Why do they all have the same face
I hope the nostalgia bait characters don't overshadow the rest of the game.
It's always so tacky, especially when so many of these characters such as Sigurd come from Japan-only games in the first place.
It's like Nintendo is saying "Hey remember this amazing character? No? Oh that's right, we could never be bothered to translate his game! Hah, oh well! here he is anyway!"
Looks like they have the B-Team working on this Fire Emblem. Hopefully they make a cooler, less Disney-looking, one in the future.
I'm still cautiously optimistic. All these returning heroes seem to point to a lot of fan service. While that's all well and good - if done right - this sort of thing can also backfire. I hope they also devote plenty of time to original characters in the game.
That said, Celica is amazing and is one of several reasons why I enjoyed Shadows of Valentia on 3DS so much.
I'm so excited for this game. I think all the returning heroes could work out really well - will certainly be interesting to see what mechanics they bring once we get our hands on the game.
@Tyranexx I really loved the cast of characters in Shadows of Valentia, with Celica being one of the standouts.
@Bobb It works like the pair up mechanic and I think the two can fuse like in Tokyo mirage session for a power up. Basically it's taking what happened in TMS and putting it in an actual fire emblem game. I don't know how I feel about it. Three houses dropped a lot of gimmicks that awakening and especially fates had. This seems like a step backward. Fates was terrible and I'm worried this is going to go in that direction.
I made an entire YouTube video about this (if you wanna see it my YouTube channel is Bizaster!), but I’m REALLYYY nervous for this game. I feel like it will rely way too much on the crossover elements.
@Bizaster It'll could go the opposite way where the crossovers completely take over that gameplay and are weirdly absent in the story. Like Tokyo mirage session did this and it was basically a persona game with a bit of Fe. This could just be old Fe characters replacing adjuncts and pair ups and giving you a power up and maybe you fight old bosses, but otherwise that's all you get.
@Tyranexx That's the problem. Returning heroes is fine, but I'm sure they'll also go with returning villains as an obvious move that probably pair with the og villains Tokyo mirage sessions style. That leaves a lot of question as to what point the original characters have. The basic idea of fusing with old characters is dope, but story wise I cant see it being a step forward from three houses.
Eyyo, maybe Celica will finally be in a good game?
I hope Alm is back as well. Of the two, I thought Alm was the more popular. But probably has female bias if they had to choose 1; they neglected both as a pair in FE Warriors only adding Celica representing Echoes and I hope to goodness sake that they don't repeat that with this game.. Alm is a beast, love the character, wanna see more of him outside his main game.
@Xansies I worry about the same thing
Nintendo should release a demo for this game.
This series relies a smidge too much on legacy content and characters nowadays. It makes sense for Heroes and did also for Warriors but I feel like Fates did a better job incorporating them as little bonus Amiibo things or something.
I love Celica but I don’t need to keep having her in games.
@mcdreamer Shadows of Valentia's storytelling and cast are partially what made the game for me, especially in regards to Alm and Celica. There's such a wonderful dynamic between the two. I liked the dungeon crawling and some of the mechanical differences from the rest of the series too. Call me crazy, but I even liked how time use works in the game! XD
@Xansies During the first part of the trailer in the Nintendo Direct reveal, I honestly thought they were announcing some DLC for Three Hopes or another game in the vein of Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Then it went on to confirm it's a new series entry.
To be fair, we don't have all the details yet. I'm trying to reserve my final verdict until near launch.
As much as I love Celica, I'm hoping they don't forget Alm as well; he's been tending to get sidelined in favor of only Celica lately I noticed and it just feels incomplete without both of them.
best FE girl. change my mind.
@Koffyman Its very green of them. You know? Reduce, reuse and recycle and such.
One of my all-time favorite FE characters. Great to see her in Engage.
Man, this game is going to be great! I do wonder how everything will be tied together, but from the looks of it, they'll make it work, somehow.
It’s a bit funny how Celica is chosen over Alm to represent Echoes in other games, yet in Echoes itself, she gets locked in a dungeon and Alm needs to save the day in the final chapter. At the end of the day, Alm has higher billing in the story, but Celica is prettier and has fire magic, so she’s understandably more popular with those who never played it.
This game is starting to give me Tokyo Mirage Sessions/FE vibes. Hopefully it won't be too gimmicky. I'm loving the colors. Can't wait to see the other returning / avatar characters.
