If you were planning to pick up Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D from the 3DS eShop any time soon, you might have to wait.
Konami has had to remove 12 different versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 from multiple digital storefronts - this includes the Nintendo 3DS eShop, due to license renewels.
We are currently working on renewing the licenses for select historical archive footage used in-game, therefore, we have made the temporary decision to begin suspending the sale of METAL GEAR SOLID 2, METAL GEAR SOLID 3 and all products that include these games from digital storefronts globally starting from November 8th, 2021.
We sincerely ask for your patience and understanding as we work towards making these products available for purchase once again. Thank you for your continued support of the METAL GEAR series.
The games and platforms included are the following:
Which products will be temporarily removed?
・PlayStation®3 METAL GEAR SOLID 2 SONS OF LIBERTY HD EDITION
・PlayStation®3 METAL GEAR SOLID 3 SNAKE EATER HD EDITION
・PlayStation®3 METAL GEAR SOLID HD EDITION
・PlayStation®Vita METAL GEAR SOLID 2 SONS OF LIBERTY HD EDITION
・PlayStation®Vita METAL GEAR SOLID 3 SNAKE EATER HD EDITION
・PlayStation®Vita METAL GEAR SOLID HD COLLECTION
・PlayStation™Now METAL GEAR SOLID HD COLLECTION
・Xbox 360 METAL GEAR SOLID HD EDITION: 2 & 3
・Nintendo 3DS METAL GEAR SOLID SNAKE EATER 3D
・GOG.com METAL GEAR SOLID 2 SUBSTANCE
・NVIDIA® SHIELD™ METAL GEAR SOLID 2 HD for SHIELD TV
・NVIDIA® SHIELD™ METAL GEAR SOLID 3 HD for SHIELD TV
*Some of the above titles are not available in some countries and regions
Again, it's only temporary...but it is a nice reminder to grab it next time it's available, if you have been wanting to add it to your 3DS Home menu.

Of course right when I was about to purchase it 😤

Great 3DS Game!
But it has a Bug near the End, if you save while in the driving Sequence, you'll have to play from the Beginning... Happpened to me ...
Good thing I still had a copy of Snake Eater on the PS2, PS3, PS Vita, PC, Xbox, Wii, Wii U, and 3DS.
And this is why Nintendo still has a hold of all, if not most of their IPs. They stay on top of their patents.
Strange Azuris, I played Snake Eater 3D repeatedly, and never ran into that bug. Well, I suppose just be mindful of it and use sleep mode instead of saving when you can.
How does the 3DS version compare to the Vita/PS versions? From that trailer it seems like they tailored it pretty well for the device!
The GOG removal is bizarre considering that it was only released on that platform a few months ago.
And it wouldn't surprise me if some of these games won't return to their storefronts (especially the Vita/3DS instalments) for the negligible sales that they may attract on those platforms.
@Knuckles
Well, it is not as common to leave the Game in that Scene haha
But you can search it up, i've searched for a Solution back then, but haven't found any.
@Kintypoo121 The frame rate is choppy as hell consistently. That said, still works as an entry level Metal Gear game. Speaking from experience. I haven't played any of the other games, but I really loved Metal Gear Solid 3D Snake Eater when I played it.
@Specter_of-the_OLED SnakeEater is not on PC
I mean, if they're committed to renewing them (especially pastgen ports) rather than just delisting the bunch and calling it a day, that already sounds appreciably above the trend.
I already have Snake Eater 3D but plan to get it on Vita (or, rather, get the second game it's bundled with - just like with Virtue's Last Reward which I could have played on 3DS, but the Vita bundle containing it was my only legal purchase shot at 999). Glad to hear the collection is only going poof temporarily as well.
This is how I played the game, my first and only dip into Metal Gear.
The ending sequence. Impossible to forget. What a 4fps thrill.
@Kintypoo121 it's "mwah" at best, playable for sure but much better on the Vita.
However the 3ds one does have fancy 3d mode that looks great and gives you even worse frame rate, sadly a New 3DS model doesn't solve that issue (tried it)
Still amazing they pulled this considering the hardware.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I know this is probably /s. But it never launched on any other Ninty platforms right?! 😅😂
3ds snake eater is the best imo simply for the QOL feature that you can move whilst crouched. Correct me if im wrong but in every other version of snake eater you either need to be standing or laying down to move but cant whilst crouched on 1 knee like you can in the 3ds version. Was so flippin useful.
@Rayquaza2510 Yeah, that’s one problem of mid-gen hardware upgrades: You‘d have to actively update games to make use of the new hardware, meaning a Switch Pro won’t solve any problems of a poorly optimized game on the current Switch (* sigh *). And I doubt that a publisher/dev/etc who already didn’t bother to optimize the game would go out of their way and rewrite the game to make use of new hardware.
On Topic: I think it’s quite amazing that Konami actually added exclusive content, QOL changes and reworked models to the 3DS version, while the HD version on PS3, PSVita and Xbox 360 is just the upscaled PS2 game…
I already own a physical copy of MGS3D but I hope the digital version gets back up very soon.
I have a dream that one day Switch will see a port of MGS V.
“Let’s get physical… physical…”
Despite how bad Konami is, it's quite sad how copyright law is still a joke. I thought it was bad with music, but it's reached another new low it seems.
Well, this will see it tumble down the charts.
Here's hoping that this reminds them they could have made versions available for systems released since 2011?
@ModdedInkling You’re thinking of Trademarks, which are different to Licenses. Patents cover the design and architecture of hardware, or unique gameplay systems. Trademarks cover tangible commercial properties like brand names, logos, colours, sounds etc. A License is an agreement with a third-party to use their property, which in this case is archive footage, probably used in a cut-scene.
It’s a nice reminder… if how little Metal Gear we have on Nintendo systems…
We never even got the GBC version on the 3DS eshop.
@ModdedInkling parents and content licenses are two totally different things...
Games like MGS or GTA use licensed content such as videos, music etc. which isn't very surprising given the type of game.
When they did the licensing they probably didn't expect the games to be on sale for such a long time or didn't think it would make financial sense to license the content for a longer initial period.
The only thing you might fault them for is now renewing licenses earlier.
As for Nintendo, given the kind of games they make it's far less likely they'll run into such issues. But who knows, Nintendo might have licenses on content used in their games as well. Maybe Nintendo is just a lot smarter about not letting the licenses lapse hence we don't hear about it.
@Ponyo404 Took the words out of my mouth! Smash Bros is a good example of Nintendo licensing content (even some of their own music has to be licensed from a publisher if it was ever released commercially). They also license software for development PhysX/Unity for example.
How much was it on the store? Anyone know?
The videogame industry has so many problems, that people forget about this, videogame companies keep screwing up when paying for licenses, not paying for a lifelong license that allows the game to be sold even after it expires.
If you paid to use music in a game, or make a game based on a movie/show/comic/etc, even after the license is expired, you should be still allowed to sell that game unchanged after 10, 20 or 30 years, you just can't make another game with the license, Hollywood movies rarely have this problem, Sony no longer has the rights to Ghost Rider, they can't make a third movie, but can still sell the two movies that were already released.
Nice that they're actually bothering to put it back once they've renewed the licence instead of just taking it down permanently like some publishers might do for 3DS games in 2021.
@Entrr_username Konami constantly abuses it to terminate fan works and the like, this is just it coming to rightfully bite them in the rear IMO
@Little_Squee it's easy to port because it also got PS3 version.
@Kintypoo121 They reworked textures and animations, so that they'd pop up from the 3DS screen, literally. 3D is great, and they made some gameplay additions as well. For me, it's bthe best version of Snake Eater.
Got it physical for the 3DS. The first and only Metal Gear game I played, gotta say it blew away my expectations.
Also have it physical, and I must say, it's probably almost my favourite version of my favourite entry in one of the greater series out there. I just wished it had better controls. 3D was always underrated on 3DS, I still think it was actually better to pull you into the game than even Super Ultra High Definition 32k To The Max Millenium Edition X Ultimate will ever be. But due to it not always being perfect, it was also the first thing to pull you back out, sadly. RE Revelations on N3DS, slider all the way up, 3D setting at maximum... Luigi's Mansion 2... and a few other great examples... I'd pick them over the exact same games with HD graphics any day of the week, no hesitation.
I bet this has something to do with some of the licensed music in the game.
The ending theme is “Way to Fall” by Starsailor.
just port this baby over to Switch already. Snake Eater is the only MGS game I'm curious about. Loved 1, liked 2, hated 4, like 5 right now. But missed 3 goddammit.
I went ahead and grabbed the 3DS version this morning before it goes (hopefully not for long) at $20. Decent price, just never got around to buying it before.
@Stocksy On the UK eShop, £17.99 (personally brought it on sale, 50% for £8.99).
It was just in sale on the 3DS eshop too.
@starlac cheers fella. Forgot this game existed and was gonna pick up physical but wonder how much it was digital. Physical it’s held value well.
@tka060681 Precisely why I thought it might be possible. Let's hope!
Honestly, I wouldn't bother with the 3DS version. The framerate is absolutely shocking.
This only raises a question: Why hasn't the Switch got any MGS game yet?
