WarioWare Gold on the 3DS is arguably the definitive Warioware collection with the inclusion of the best 300 microgames covering every title in the series from the original 2003 Game Boy Advance release to the slightly more recent 2013 Wii U game.
As fantastic as the new microgame collection is, there are probably plenty of people out there thinking it's a quick cash grab on Wario's behalf - with Nintendo simply adding the best existing minigames to the new title and then releasing it. In an email interview with Kotaku, WarioWare Gold Director Goro Abe revealed how grueling the process actually was. It turns out it's a lot more than just a remaster - with a lot of effort going into it:
We basically redrew the art for all the microgames and reprogrammed them from scratch...A lot of the games that look unchanged at first glance actually have a lot of changes upon comparison.
Prior to this stage of development, Abe's team had to select from more than 1,100 microgames and decide which ones would make the cut for Gold's release on the 3DS. To do this, he surveyed staff to find out which ones they liked the most and then ranked each microgame based on a series of questions:
I surveyed the staff to determine which games from these titles we should polish. Then, I ranked all of the microgames according to elements like which ones are appreciated by the staff through the survey, which ones have rules that are easy to understand, and which ones don’t feel old when played now.
Are you surprised to hear so much work went into modernising all of these classic microgames for the 3DS? Have you played the new game in the series? Do you like the microgames that are on offer? Tell us below.

Neato. But would still rather a Wario platformer. Still kind of amazes me that that NSMB game on 3DS that was all about coins and money, wasn't a Wario game.
Wow. I might have to buy this game now, but as ReaderRagfish said, maybe at a lower price tag.
Now, The Top 100...I wonder how that went in comparison...
I still need to get around to buying it... but Luigi’s Mansion was my big 3ds purchase this month haha
It's great to hear about the thought and care that was put into this project, but I think that this effort would be more widely appreciated if it was on a console that more people still cared about.
Gold was absolutely amazing. It was the perfect swan song for the 3DS and my last major retail purchase for the system.
WarioWare Gold is awesome. I was kind of bummed when I heard this game was on 3ds instead of Switch but after purchasing and playing it I understand why it's such a perfect fit for the 3ds. I hope the next WarioWare game goes to the Switch though.
I’ve had a lot of fun with the game. However, as well-made as it is, one thing is always off to me: the tempo. The tempo in older WarioWares (lets say, DIY or Touched!) is very rigid and consistent, easy to follow and get into synch with. Some of the songs in Gold cut off abruptly or start off-tempo, messing up my rhythm and microgame performance.
...although that’s probably just me, and even if it’s not, it’s a very minor complaint. It’s an awesome, fun, wacky game.
Sounds like 1,000 ways to be Silly.
I was really disappointed that there wasn’t any sort of 100% acknowledgement after Rhythm Heaven had the “Thanks for playing” thing. All those missions completed for absolutely nothing.
I have no desire to dust off my 3DS. Shame, I would’ve gotten this for Switch... ah well. I hope the series is getting a bit of a revival now though, a Switch entry would be great.
I've bought every WarioWare on launch day and this one was no exception. It's worth the price just to hear Wario speak full lines of text.
I still have the demo sitting on my 3DS. I'll likely get the actual game when it goes down in price like others have mentioned.
The 3DS games library is epic.
the game is absolutely amazing. i can really feel the love and effort put into it, same with rhythm heaven megamix. they really know how to make their compilation games feel special
WarioWare Gold is fantastic, my only complaint about it, is that it's not on Switch. I do hope for more WarioWare games and Wario games in general, we need a new Wario Land/World. Also it'd be great if Nintendo started using the WarioWare characters in Mario Party, Sports and Kart games, instead of just the generic enemy characters. I thinking some like a M/Wario Party Crashers.
You know, Nintendo, a new Wario Land game would be nice...or WarioWare/Rhythm Heaven on the Switch...or a new DIY game.
So the game got more attention than the WiiU to Switch ports Nintendo did? That’s nice.
Would be cool if gaming outlets said something about the fullprize lazy ports Nintendo did for Switch. Thos are way more a cash grab than this game.
Bottom line is its still the easiest game to program for a fast turn around. Filling a gap in the 3ds line up.
Not for one second did I think it was a quick cash grab
So it's really just a suped up, greatest hits game? I was hoping for new experiences and lunacy. I don't think I'm ready to pay full price for games that I've already enjoyed. Maybe if it ever gets a price drop.
Best Warioware in my opinion fun and challenging, and worth getting just to listen to the characters that now have voice
I like how they hyped up the fact that it was fully voice acted, then all the phone calls were simply lines of text.
Bravo on all the minigames, but they definitely forgot to add something into the mix.
The cake was tasteless.
I'm sure it was not a money grab. It is giving the punters something new'ish to play since Nintendo are still selling the DS but are not releasing any 'new' games.
It's cheaper revamping old stuff. It does suggest a new console next year.
It was certainly a very polished entry in the series and worth playing, i don't regret buying it. Can't wait to see what they have in store for Wario on the Switch.
@ShadJV Beleive me, this game could not work on any other console. It was specifically made for the 3DS.
I'm okay with Wario Ware games, but if it was a Wario platformer like the Wario Land series, I'd buy in a heartbeat
Warioware Gold is the best one yet in my opinion. From the top notch minigames to the amazing cutscenes, to the fun new modes (especially accelerator and Gamer.) It's a ridiculous experience that wouldn't have worked anywhere other than 3DS. Sadly no 3D, but with all the gyro elements it wouldn't have worked.
That's.. the most I've ever heard Wario talk. O.o
It's brilliant how they have been able to include all the best from both Twisted and Touched.
Smooth Moves had few big hits too, but it's reather obvious why they can't be in there. And having the Super MakerMatic 21 from D.I.Y. in there is probably too much to ask. ^_^;;
I'm glad they went all out with this "best of" album. They 3DS is really enjoying some quality efforts here late in its life.
Seems to be a lot of hate for the 3DS in the comments these days. This game wouldn’t even work on Switch with the remastered DS minigames. Nintendo should release the games on the system it works best on for them. I am happy whatever they release games on. My 3DS is going nowhere.
I'm fine with the insistent terminology steering clear of the "cash grab" alias, but you gotta admit its timing was outstandingly poor.
@ChompyMage I know, I dug out my 3DS for the demo to see if it was worth me keeping my 3DS our again. The microgames obviously were all made for the DS family. But just as they said they remade every game from the ground up for the 3DS, they could’ve just made a new Switch entry.
Anyone who is dismissive of the game or calls it a "cash grab" either hasn't played it or hates joy. Warioware Gold oozes quality.
Would still buy this if it came out as an eshop release on Switch...
I hate this new lazy 'recycle everything' from Nintendo. If you only get one Rhythm Tengoku/Heaven, Wario Ware, Mario Kart and Smash Bros then I want totally new content and not some remastered old things.
@BigKing Why did you list Smash Bros?
@TheLZdragon The new smash bros is mostly a rehash.
First, WarioWare for Switch will most likely be out, and made to support the Switch and its various techniques for control. As already said, WarioWare Gold was made for the DS/3DS line, and this 3DS fan happens to like it (and continues to play it on and off since purchasing it on launch day).
Also, when I decide to give up 3DS, or get a Switch, or maybe even a PS4 or an XBox, that's actually my decision to make and not yours to influence or pressure. If you like the Switch, fine, that's your choice and I have nothing against it, since I am leaning that way. My choice right this moment is to stick with the 3DS and the backlog of great games I still have to play, including more WarioWare (and maybe even some Luigi's Mansion).
