Pokémon Shuffle is one of multiple 'mon free-to-start downloads on 3DS, and has also been released on mobile. A major update to version 1.3.0 for the 3DS iteration has now, seemingly, brought it into line with features that have previously rolled out on smart devices.
First of all, if you're jumping into the app for the first time in over 30 days after completing the update - like this writer - you get a gift of 10,000 coins and 30 hearts, which should allow for plenty of free playtime. Everyone that does the update gets 3000 coins, to, in addition to a new 'raise max level' item to use on one of your Pokémon.
There are some user interface improvements, such as viewing a Pokémon's level progress or fast travelling between stages - SpotPass notifications can also be turned on. A key addition is a Survival mode for those past level 150, which is rather self-explanatory, and beyond that general good play in various stages and modes can earn you 'Mission Cards'. Earn cards and get rewards such as items that'd normally cost you a lot of collectibles or micro-transactions.
It's a meaty update, all told, and could certainly add a bit of extra life to the puzzler - check it out and let us know what you think.
Thanks to RupeeClock for the heads up.

cool I'll download it now...
wait you telling me the version that came out later got more features than the version I play and use the most?
Thanks Shuffle mobile
I downloaded this update in a coffee shop this morning. Still play this almost every day. A great update!
They would do this after I deleted the game from my New 3DS XL... (I backed up the save data in case I ever wanna play again.) No biggie for me. I played 3DS Shuffle for a little over a year and simply got burned out on it. Typically, I don't play free-to-play games and the only reason I played this one is because it was Pokemon. Still, I never purchased a single thing - not one cent - in the game and as a result, I got tired of the ridiculously difficult later stages (I was about 40 away from the 400s). No thanks. But hope everyone else enjoys the new update, though.
A great update to an already great game!
I especially love the Mission Cards that provide variety to the gameplay and rewards it, too!
I updated last night and love the new additions!
I shall redownload it then!
Played until it was too difficult without spending money, spent some, decided I'd be much too likely to spend too much and I could better invest those funds. Might check it out again though.
Seems they're adding more stuff to extend the game's life as I believe we're just over 100-ish Pokemon left to add before we can catch em all and finally 100% this title
Big question is though, will Sun and Moon's Pokemon be added into the game to extend it even further into next year?
I play this game way too much.
I only try to spend money on it when there is a bonus (buy 6 jewels, get 6 for free). At 135 hours and counting, I figure I have gotten my money's worth out of it.
If I could buy this game I would, but I can't stand the heart mechanic. This won't be enough to bring me back. (Yes I know the ftp model helps them churn out constant updates but it just doesn't work for me)
I've been playing this on my tablet, but this may get me to turn on the 3DS version again.
I don't even care about Pokemon but I downloaded this when it came out, got addicted, and got absolutely everything in this game, got all the prizes in all the contests, all without spending anything.
TSince theny wife got me a New 3DS XL for my birthday and my save file for this game was the one thing that didn't transfer properly. No way I was going to try and get all that stuff again. It's been so nice since then, no more signing in multiple times a day just to farm Meowth. I'll stick to Pokemon Picross now for my free-to-play, license-I-don't-care-about fix. Nearly got the daily training rewards maxed on that one.
I can think of another recently released Pokemon game that could use a survival mode...
Shame the 3ds and the smartphone versions don't sync.
I'm focused on Pokemon Picross now. Played this a little past stage 150 but just burnt out. I'm about 2/3 of the way through the picross main game and I've spent $1.
The first 150 stages were really a solid game in themselves, only needed to use items on four stages (Zoroark is an awful main stage and should be deleted), including what was then "the final boss", so the difficulty curve worked really well.
Everything after stage 150 is just constant cheap move after cheap move and almost impossible to S-Rank anything unless you want to resort to playing multiple times a day for Meowth farming - and even after you do farm coins the catch rates are all between 11 and 20% anyway. They forgot to make the entire last half of the game fun.
Still play and enjoy this game most days, like Rumble and Picross. Never spent a penny on any of them though.
Streetpassed survival!
Loving the update, mostly the fast travel, level progress, super effect filter, and the Pokemon Safari checklist. Good to know that I'm still only missing Houndour.
So how do these free to play games work? Are you blocked by paywalls past a certain point, or do micro transactions simply speed up the process but everything is unlockable if you spend a long time on the game?
Just 3DS right? I'd re-add it to my android tablet or iphone.
@Thejoe66 Everything is unlockable for free, but you have to put a huge amount of time in.
@Rikaria It did not.
ok
