Late last year Vblank Entertainment finally revealed the successor to the brilliant Retro City Rampage, with Shakedown Hawaii announced and confirmed to be targeting the 3DS.
It's set 30 years after Retro City Rampage as the ageing protagonist - 'The Player' - comes out of retirement to fight for his criminal empire, and we can be sure it'll have plenty of humour and pop culture references. Now we get a look at it on the 3DS, with Nintendo publishing an early look at the portable's version of the game - it has nice chunky pixels, while we get a look at mechanics like drive-by shootings and cover-based shoot-outs on foot.
The man behind Vblank Entertainment, Brian Provinciano, told us last year that "other Nintendo platforms are possible", referencing the NX; a decision on that will come when more is known about that hardware and its release date. As for Shakedown Hawaii, Provinciano has previously stated on social media that he hopes to have it out by early 2017.
Do you like the look of this? Let us know.

As expected, it looks awesome!
Looks cool! Was the first one like this one?
I think I need to get Retro City Rampage...
@readyletsgo The first one was like 8-bit GTA with tongue-in-cheek humour. This seems to continue that but with "updated" 16-bit graphics
Just downloaded Retro City Rampage on 3ds (on discount) and loving it, so I'm very interested in this title
Oh what a shame, I thought it would be my most anticipated indie of 2016 and instead it sounds like we'll have to wait an extra year
loved the first one and can't wait to grab this as soon as it's released!
I could get into this.
Looks great! I loved Retro City Rampage so can't wait for this.
On the release date, I'm sure if Provinciano can get it done for 2016 he will, but it was sensible of him to say in a Twitter Q & A that it should be later than early 2017. Best to over-deliver rather than over-promise!
Will this one support the 3D feature? That was my one disappointment with the first one.
The series really feel like what the natural successor to GTA and GTA2 could have been, but never was. Can't wait!
I hope it's not going to be basically the same game with a coat of 16 bit paint. Not that that would stop me from playing this!
@LostHeaven Honestly, it looks pretty good without 3D. I can only wonder if it will cause some slow down with 3D turned on.
I didn't like the look of the first one, but I can definitely get on board with the squeal.
I'm suffering through the extremely slow performance of this site to say that the WiiWare RCR was one of the service's best games, and if this game to NX it would be an insta buy.
I guess this is supposed to be like a Hotline Miami type game?
Except these graphics aren't neon puke, and actually look really nice!
I like the direction the series is taking, but sadly if the third game took another step forward in technology, the parody factor towards the GTA franchise would be gone. Maybe the next chapter could parody "San Andreas" just as Shakedown Hawaii is a 16-bit version of the Florida-esque Vice City seen in the eponymous Grand Theft Auto title, but a V-Blank game that even features polygons to a marginal level would strip Brian Provinciano's saga of its nature as a sandbox pastiche that made us fall in love with it. Time will tell, though.
Looks awesome! But by 2017 I'll forget it exists.
Man that guy is talented. This should be pretty cool.
Awwww maaaan...early 2017...but I wanna shoot everything nowww...
I hope this has some 16-bit graphic filters. The 3DS RCR had some great 8-bit filters, I specially liked the C64 one.
Anyway the game already looks snes like on the video, perhaps a megadrive filter, with opaque colours and the typical checkers pattern shadows.
it looks like a SNES GTA game. Still looks fun!
Awwwwww 2017???? But we want it now!
@LostHeaven I thought I was the only one that was gonna mention that lack of 3D in the 1st game, was a real bummer. Glad to see I'm not alone. Here's hoping
@Gen0neD I might be one of the few who bought the 3DS first and foremost for the stereoscopic 3D. Still in love with it!
I understand why the first game didn't use the feature, as it was a port of a game that had been released for a while. Perhaps the extra work needed to implement 3D wouldn't be worthwhile.
This sequel is being created having the 3DS in mind, hence my hopes.
And yes: the first game is still well worth it! It's just a shame, because there's something about 2D or sprite based games that look stuning in stereoscopic 3D. If any of you have bought any of M2's remakes of Sega classics, you know what I'm talking about!
@LostHeaven Confirmed no 3D

No 3D, but yes, it does have New 3DS enhancements, while it will still run on the original 3DS."

Not that any of this would prevent me from buying it, still looks great.
@Nin10doh Thank you for sharing and answering my question.
I really can't understand it. I currently have around 40 games for the 3DS and, excluding Virtual Console ones, only 3 of them don't have 3D (Pokémon X, Pokémon OR and Pokémon Picross). Whether they're gems developed from scratch for the console such as Fire Emblem or Zelda, ports of PC or console games such as Street Fighter 4 or Smash Bros, or even indie games such as Shovel Knight, all of them found a way to implement stereoscopic 3D beautifully. Doesn't seem that complicated, honestly, but what do I know?... 😕
@LostHeaven Not a problem bud,
I'm with you, but we have to remember this is a one man team, and a still a very great looking game. Let's not let the lack 3D of deter us. I still consider FF: Explorers lazy for no 3D with the staff which I am sure is far more than the an sole individual.
Yeah this looks awesome! Definitely looking forward to it. RCR on 3DS played great.
Really think this game look like something on the Neo-Geo more than a SNES game, albeit with a brighter color palette. Still looking forward to it though.
Awesome! Literally just playing through RCR now and loving it. Delighted to know that there will be a sequel.
The first one wasn't able to hold my attention for too long, but I'll happily support a new game and a budding game dev.
